CHRISTIAN ASSISTANCE NETWORK, INC.
WHAT IS CAN AND WHAT DOES CAN DO?
Christian Assistance Network, Inc. (CAN) was formally incorporated in 1984, after a group of 7 local churches arranged to pool their resources in an effort to provide more effectively for those who called upon them for assistance.
To maximize resources and minimize duplication of services, an all-volunteer staff makes it possible for those contributing member churches - now 28 - to direct clients' needs to a clearinghouse office for assistance.
This work is accomplished through telephone referrals made to the CAN office by member churches or bona fide local agencies, on the behalf of a client in need of assistance.
Record keeping by the CAN office staff enables the CAN volunteer to "screen" clients, help determine need, and provide assistance or make appropriate referrals.
It is now possible for member churches to direct certain clients requesting help with food, formula, diapers, & clothing to a centralized location for help .... provided the items are available and the client has been cleared through the normal channel. This facility is called the Interfaith Service Center. In addition, there are 3 other member churches maintaining a food locker, to which clients may be directed once their request is processed.
CAN is supported by the pledges of Member Churches, ... an amount determined individually by each member church, for the maintenance of the CAN office, supplies, and equipment. Some individuals and organizations also give support CAN/ or the ISC.
In addition, a separate account it maintained for our Interfaith Service Center, the monies of which are used for rent, food, supplies, & maintenance.
CAN has just received authorization to receive some FEMA funds for the purchase of food ... prior to January 2003, these funds were distributed through one of our member churches.
Should any request for client monetary assistance be approved, individual benevolence-fund member churches mail checks to approved entities, never to clients (landlord, water company, etc. ... NO PG&E, NO DEPOSITS OF ANY KIND)
A board of Directors, one member per church, (20 Directors as of 1/1/03) oversees the work and finances of CAN, always mindful that funds are limited, and that CAN is obligated to be good stewards of all our support.
During the Holidays, CAN oversees A Thanksgiving Basket Coordination Program.
Our Board of Directors must approve the coordination of any projects.
The Thanksgiving Program is coordinated by CAN, but in cooperation with other community agencies, service groups, member-churches.
THANK YOU FOR YOUR PART IN THIS MINISTRY TO THE POOR OF THE YUBA-SUTTER AREA THROUGH THE ACTIVE INVOLVEMENT OF YOUR CHURCH!
